What is Drag?

Drag is a queer art form that involves the playful and deliberate performance of gender expression. It's about exploring and challenging traditional notions of masculinity and femininity, often through exaggerated makeup, costumes, and performances. It's not about conforming to any specific gender identity or role, but rather freedom of expression and creating your own unique persona.

Drag comes in countless forms, with some of the most well-known being:

Ultimately, drag is about self-discovery, pushing boundaries, and having fun. It's a space where anyone can explore their identity, express their creativity, and connect with a vibrant community.

Culture + Community

Beyond individual expression, drag is about creating a vibrant and supportive community. For many LGBTQ+ people, drag spaces offer a sense of belonging and acceptance that can be hard to find elsewhere. It's a place to celebrate individuality, embrace differences, and form deep connections with like-minded people.

Historically, drag artists have been at the forefront of the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. They were often the ones on the front lines of protests and demonstrations, demanding equality and challenging discrimination. Their fearless performances and outspoken activism helped pave the way for the progress we see today.

Today, drag continues to push boundaries and open minds around the world. Drag performers deconstruct gender norms, challenge societal expectations, and advocate for social justice by sparking conversations, inspiring change, and showing the world that there's no one right way to be yourself.

Getting Started

Creating your Drag Persona

So, you're ready to dive into the world of drag?  Fantastic!  Creating your drag persona is a thrilling journey of self-discovery and artistic expression. It's about finding the character within you, amplifying certain traits, and crafting a stage presence that captivates and entertains. Here's a little guidance to get you started.

1. Inspiration:  Its everywhere! Look around you!  Where do you find inspiration?  It could be a favorite performer, a historical figure, a mythical creature, a piece of art, a song, or even just a feeling.  Don't limit yourself.  The more diverse your sources, the more unique your persona will be.  Think about the stories you want to tell and the messages you want to convey.

2.  Name Game: Your drag name is a crucial part of your persona.  It should be memorable, catchy, and reflect the essence of your character.  Play around with words, puns, and alliterations.  Consider your persona's style and vibe.  Does it need to be glamorous?  Funny?  Mysterious? The Drag Name can be one of the most elusive and intimidating parts of drag, and you might go through a few names before you find one that sticks. Don't be afraid to try out new names until you find one you like!

3.  Defining Your Character: Who is your drag persona? What's their backstory?  What are their strengths and weaknesses?  What are their signature looks?  The more detailed your persona, the more engaging you will be.  Think about your personality, mannerisms, and voice.

4.  Visualizing the Look: What kind of makeup, hair, and costumes would bring your persona to life?  Sketch out some ideas, make a Pinterest board, and consider what resources you have available.

5.  Practice Makes Perfect: Once you have a basic idea of your persona, start practicing!  Practice your walk, your talk, and your stage presence.  The more you practice, the more confident you'll become.

6.  Embrace the Journey: Creating a drag persona is an ongoing process.  Don't be afraid to experiment, evolve, and change your character over time.  The most important thing is to have fun and express yourself!

Learning Drag Makeup

Drag makeup is an art form in itself, and it's a key element in creating your drag persona. But fair warning: it can be tricky!  Don't worry if your first attempts feel less than flawless – that's totally normal. The key is to keep practicing and experimenting. The more you play with makeup, the more you'll develop your own style and techniques.

There's no single "right" way to do drag makeup. Some queens go for full-on glamour, while others prefer a more avant-garde or theatrical look. It's all about finding what works for you and your character. However, there are some tips and tricks that can help you achieve a more polished and professional look, if that's what you're aiming for.

We know that starting out with makeup can be tough on the wallet, so Queerfest has some makeup available for you to experiment with - just get in touch if you'd like to use it outside of Queerfest events.  It's a great opportunity to try out different products and looks without breaking the bank.

It's all about the HAIR!

Hair is a major key to unlocking your drag persona. It's a powerful tool for transformation, and it defines and drives a look. Whether you're aiming for towering heights, luscious curls, or something entirely unseen, here’s a breakdown to get you started.

WIG!

Wigs are the go-to choice for many drag performers. They offer versatility, convenience, and allow you to experiment with different styles without damaging your natural hair.

Types of Wigs: From synthetic to human hair, lace front to full cap, the options are endless. Synthetic wigs are generally more affordable and come in a wide array of colors and styles. Human hair wigs offer a more natural look and can be styled with heat, but they come at a higher price point. Lace front wigs create a realistic hairline, while full cap wigs offer maximum coverage.

Styling Your Wig: Styling can make or break a wig. Wigs that come ready-for-stage are often very expensive, so many beginner drag artists learn to style their own wigs. YouTube tutorials are your best friend for learning new styling skills, such as those by Jaymes Mansfield, THE VILLBERGS, and onlinekyne. Don't be afraid to experiment with different techniques.

Beyond Wigs

While wigs are popular, they aren't the only option.

Your Natural Hair: Consider incorporating your own hair into your drag look. Teasing, styling, and adding extensions can create dramatic effects.

Hairpieces and Extensions: Hairpieces and extensions can add volume, length, or pops of color. They can be used in combination with wigs or your natural hair.

Creative Alternatives: Think outside the box! Use craft foam, yarn, or other materials to create unique and sculptural hairstyles.

Tips and Tricks

Secure Your Wig: A well-secured wig is essential for a confident performance. Use wig caps, combs, and pins to keep it in place.

Practice Makes Perfect: Don't be discouraged if your first attempt isn't perfect. Styling hair takes practice. Keep experimenting and learning new techniques.

Embrace the Drama: Drag hair is all about the drama! Don't be afraid to go big and bold.

Remember, your hair is an extension of your drag persona.  Have fun with it, experiment, and find a style that makes you feel fabulous!

Costuming

The costume is a crucial part of a drag look. It's how you present yourself to the world and express your unique style. The best part is, there are no rules! You can wear anything from off-the-rack items to an elaborate bespoke piece, as long as it makes you feel confident and fierce.

Luckily, there are lots of great way to find the perfect costume without breaking the bank. There are several sustainable and affordable options accessible from here in St Andrews:

Charity Shops: Explore the many charity shops around town to discover hidden gems waiting to be transformed into showstopping drag creations. The best tip I can give you is to go frequently! Even if it's just for 5 minutes after a class. You might find something fantastic!

Online Secondhand Platforms: Vinted, in particular, is an excellent resource for finding unique and affordable pre-loved clothing. Price filters are very handy for keeping things within your budget.

StAndReuse: Our local secondhand organization has a fantastic selection of clothing and accessories.

Another tip is to follow local drag artists on Instagram. Drag closet sales are a great opportunity to snag one-of-a-kind pieces and support your fellow queens!

Personalizing your outfit through styling and customization is the most important step to creating a cohesive look. Rhinestones and fabric glue can go a long way in transforming something from drab to drag! If you are going to be performing in the costume, make sure to consider how well you can move in it and how it will look in whatever lighting you are performing in.

If you're interested in learning to sew your own garments, consider renting a sewing machine from Transition St Andrews' tool share. They can also get you started with free sewing lessons

Performance

Drag is often thought to be synonymous with lip syncing – it's a powerful way to connect with music and an audience. Although it is a staple of many drag performances, lip syncing is not the only option!

Safety & Accessibility

Staying Safe in Drag

Drag is a fabulous form of expression, but it's important to prioritize safety. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

Generally, St Andrews is known for being a safe town, but it is good to be extra cautious while you are in drag.

Is Drag Accessible?

Drag is for everyone! While there can be challenges, the beauty of drag lies in its adaptability and inclusivity.  It's about creativity, self-expression, and community.

Creative Resourcefulness: Drag doesn't require a huge budget. Thrift stores, DIY projects, and online marketplaces offer affordable options for costumes and makeup. Creativity and resourcefulness can be your greatest assets! Think outside the box and embrace the art of making something fabulous from seemingly little.

Drag is for All Bodies: Whether you're a seasoned dancer or have limited mobility, there are countless ways to express yourself through drag. Think about character-driven performances, fashion presentations, comedic acts, or spoken word pieces. Focus on your strengths and find a style that works for you.

Celebrating Diversity: Drag celebrates diversity in all its forms. POC, trans, and gender non-conforming individuals have always been at the forefront of drag, pushing boundaries and redefining beauty standards. Your unique experiences and perspectives are what make your drag interesting.

Community Support: The drag community is incredibly supportive and welcoming. Connect with local performers, attend events, and find your people! Online communities are also a great place to find support and learn from others.

Beyond the Stage: Drag isn't limited to stage performances. You can express your drag persona through photoshoots, videos, or even just by dressing up for fun. Find your own way to participate and enjoy the art form.

At SaintsLGBT+, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the joy of drag. We are committed to fostering an inclusive and accessible community where everyone feels welcome and supported. We have some society resources such as make-up and clothing that students can borrow.
